The Most Visited Tourist Attraction in the World

According to UNWTO, or the United Nations World Tourism Organization, 369 million international tourists visited destinations worldwide in the first four months of 2017. Rising currency values, improved security, and affordability have helped the tourism industry, with people increasingly keen to cross off iconic landmarks on their bucket lists. As a result, Travel + Leisure has compiled a list of the world’s most popular tourist attractions. These include the Sydney Opera House, Central Park, Angkor Wat, and Christ the Redeemer statue.

Christ the Redeemer statue

There are several ways to enjoy your visit to the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. One option is to take the train to Corcovado Station in the Cosme Velho neighborhood. Then, head to the top of the statue. From there, you can view the city from the top. However, it is important to note that tickets to Christ the Redeemer are non-refundable. You must plan your time carefully so that you can enjoy the sights.

Sydney Opera House

One of the best ways to visit the iconic Sydney Opera House is to take a guided tour. These tours are led by an expert tour guide who will show you the ins and outs of the building. Tours run daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; however, they do not operate on Christmas Day or Good Friday.

Central Park

If you’re a history buff, then you have probably heard of the Met Museum, located on 13 acres of Central Park. Opened in 1880, the museum boasts over two million items in its permanent collection. You’ll find everything from classical antiquity to modern American design here. The museum’s neoclassical facade was added in 1895 by McKim, Mead, and White. The museum is relatively easy to navigate, so visiting early is the best idea to avoid crowds.

Angkor Wat

One of the most popular tourist attractions in the world is Angkor Wat, an immense temple complex in Cambodia. Despite its large scale, Angkor Wat is a relatively easy place to see on a day trip. However, for a fuller experience, consider taking a week-long tour of the complex. If you plan on spending several days in the temple complex, consider staying at a nearby hostel.

Great Pyramid of Giza

The Great Pyramid of Giza is one of the most famous tourist attractions in the world. This ancient monument is the face of Egyptian civilization, and millions of tourists visit it yearly. The pyramids, guarded by the stoic Sphinx, are a testament to the power and ambition of Egypt’s Pharaonic rulers.

Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco is California’s most popular tourist attraction. The bridge spans 1.7 miles and is supported by towers 746 feet high. The bridge is orange in color and attracts countless tourists each year. Visitors can tour the bridge twice a week, though they must schedule it online in advance. The bridge was built during the great depression and is often referred to as a symbol of strength. The bridge is visited by 41 million people annually.

Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China is one of the most iconic attractions in the world, drawing millions of visitors each year. While the Wall has been damaged and neglected most of its length, some sections have been beautifully preserved and are a popular destination for tourists worldwide. The Badaling section, which features a KFC outlet and life-size cutouts of Mao Zedong, attracts about 10 million visitors annually.

Colosseum

The Colosseum is one of the most famous landmarks of ancient Rome. It was built by Vespasian in AD 72 and enlarged eight years later by Titus the Elder. Its name, which means “epic theatre,” is derived from the enormous statue of Nero that was placed in its center. It was originally part of the Domus Aurea, the palace complex of Emperor Nero. There are many things to do at the Colosseum, including viewing the arena’s attractions. However, recent health and safety concerns have forced some businesses to close.

Pantheon

A visit to the Pantheon is a great way to see Paris in a new way. Its history is fascinating and one of the world’s most visited tourist attractions. It was originally a church but was later converted into a mausoleum. It is now a place for the graves of renowned French people. The Pantheon’s panoramic views are worth the effort.

Galleria Borghese

There are several ways to enjoy the art on display at the Galleria Borghese Gallery, but the first is to book a guided tour in advance. The tours last around two hours; the price is EUR13 per person, plus a EUR2 reservation fee. If you want to take a guided tour, it is best to reserve it at least a half-hour in advance. You can also visit the museum’s cafe and garden after the tour.
